Conflict keeps millions of children out of school in Middle East and North Africa, warns new UNICEF

More than 13 million – that is the number of children who are prevented from attending school by surging conflict and political upheaval across the Middle East and North Africa, according to a new report released by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) today. “A region which – until just a few short years ago – had the goal of universal education well within reach, today faces a disastrous situation,” says the report, Education Under Fire, which focuses on the impact of violence on schoolchildren and education systems in nine countries that have been directly or indirectly impacted by violence.

If a genie had popped out of my coffee cup early one morning just after I had been invited to lead the 1990 World Development Report on Poverty and offered me one wish, what would I have asked for? My answer will seem obvious once it is recalled that as we set about our task all we had at our disposal was information on levels of poverty and their changes over time in barely a dozen countries. What was so desperately needed, and what I would have requested, was vastly more knowledge about the poor and how their well-being was, or was not, improving.

Syrian war producing ‘lost generation’ of college-age students

Davis, California - The war in Syria has had a devastating effect on that country’s university students and scholars, creating a lost generation, according to a recent University of California, Davis, report.

As many as 70,000 Syrian university-age students are in Lebanon, but it is estimated that only 6,500 to 10,000 have been able to continue any form of higher education, according to the report. There are another 60,000 college-age Syrian refugees in Jordan and 70,000 in Turkey. Watenpaugh and his multidisciplinary research team have completed reports on Jordan and Lebanon and are completing a report on Turkey.
