Speakers share inspirational stories on the transformative power of education during Dubai Cares

Dubai Cares, part of Mohammed bin Rashed Al Maktoum Global Initiatives, hosted yesterday (Monday November 5, 2018) an event titled, “Empowerment through Education”, in an effort to inform, motivate and inspire its donor and supporter community in the UAE about the instrumental role of education on societies. The event featured three speakers, which included Her Excellency Reem bint Ibrahim Al Hashimy, UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation and Chairperson of Dubai Cares; Mohamed Sidibay, Education Activist and former child soldier advocating for children’s rights to quality education; and Vivian Onano, Youth Advisor to UN Civil Society Advisory Board and Youth Representative to Global Education monitoring Report. The intimate gathering of 150 key supporters and donors culminated in a Q&A session moderated by Tariq Al Gurg, Chief Executive Officer at Dubai Cares.

Removing scars of war in Iraq through education

With the destruction of educational facilities, homes and major population displacement, there are multiple priorities and major challenges in education for the Iraqi Government. One of the main tasks is rebuilding the infrastructure as many schools and educational facilities have been heavily damaged and others are not up to the standards that the country aspires for its children and young people. Another huge task is to update and replace outdated teaching equipment, learning materials and curriculums that are currently used throughout Iraq to catch up with the rest of the world.

Carried out by a team of experts from the University of Sussex, the review explores the role of teachers in promoting peace, reconciliation, social cohesion and violence mitigation in countries affected by conflict. Teachers often play a central, but revealed role in peacebuilding. This is the crucial conclusion of the new literature review.
