Schools in northern Mali are barely functioning, concludes mission by UNESCO and Government of Mali

19 November - The occupation of parts of northern Mali by armed groups earlier this year had an alarming impact on the region’s education system, concluded a mission to the region by UNESCO and the government of Mali, which took place from 18 to 23 October. It found that schools in and around Timbuktu were barely operational, while those in Gao and Kidal had not been able to reopen at all.

This was one of the key findings of “Education Transforms Lives,” a report released Sept. 19 by the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization’s (UNESCO) Education For All (EFA) Global Monitoring Report. According to the report, investing in basic education, particularly for girls, would help “households make better choices to counter the effects of expected weather-related disasters.”

UNICEF scales up support to Malawi’s Flood Victims as rains persist

01 Feb 2013 - Floods displace over 33 000 people and destroy schools. UNICEF is scaling up its emergency assistance in Malawi after flooding has hit the country’s southern region. A recent inter-agency assessment estimated that over 33,000 people have been displaced leaving many people without shelter or clothing. Crops have been destroyed in Mangochi, Phalombe and Nsanje districts, while over 20 schools have been disrupted, affecting thousands of children.
